The Steam Fayre is held over the first weekend in August every year and is organised and run wholly by volunteers in aid of the West Somerset Railway Associaton (Charity no 1041901). It is a major fundraising event in the railway calendar and a high profile means of promoting the railway to a broad audience. It takes place on the WSRA fields at Norton Fitzwarren.

Planning and running the annual WSRA Rally, which attracts some 2000 exhibitors and over 5000 visitors is a demanding and enjoyable task. We have many volunteers from throughout the railway, and beyond, who help in different ways and enjoy being part of this fun and friendly event, working as part of a great team. We do have some vacancies for extra help, so why not join us?

We particularly need:

  • A Safety Officer, to work with our team to provide an independent voice on safeguarding our exhibitors and visitors. A great role for someone with experience of safeguarding health & safety. If you are interested in this key role, please contact the Rally Chairman at geoff.garfield@otford.net to arrange an informal chat.
  • Help during the Rally week: any day(s) from 31st July to 7th August, to help set up all the equipment, and help pack it away.
  • Help during the weekend, 5th and 6th August, such as:
    • Ticket booth operators and programme sellers.
    • Marshalls on site during the rally to direct traffic, and ensure safety.
    • Serving and clearing in our refreshment tent
    • Sourcing prizes and running a raffle in aid of WSRA on Saturday evening in the beer tent!
    • For any of these roles, please e mail wsrarally@gmail.com, and we will get back to you

If you do not live locally, we may be able to provide camping or caravanning space on our rally fields for the weekend by prior arrangement.

Minimum age is 16 years although we are grateful for the assistance of members of the WSR's Trackers youth section at the rally.

Working on the gates or ticket booths, you will be the first person our visitors encounter when they arrive at the rally and we want to give them a warm welcome and competent service, we would therefore like you to be of a 'sunny disposition' and able to remain calm when busy.

Some of the preparation work requires physical competence and has to be undertaken even in inclement weather!

Other information

Working on our entrance gates or ticket booths provides an opportunity to volunteer if you do not have much time to commit. We ask for at least a total of four hours. Working with the Rally could be an introduction to the WSR and becoming a fully fledged volunteer on the Railway.

We will supply high-visibility waistcoats as necessary.
